The examination for these schools will take place in early September. There is one test for all of the Grammar schools. The test is provided by CEM and is made up of two papers, each approximately 50 minutes long. Each test paper is divided into smaller individual sections that test verbal ability (reading & comprehension and literacy skills), non-verbal ability and mathematics. There are no sections of writing within the test – all questions are multiple choice and children record their answers on a separate answer sheet.

The Grammar Schools in Birmingham is made up of the following eight schools:
Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School for Boys
King Edward VI Aston School
King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys
King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls
King Edward VI Five Ways School
King Edward VI Handsworth School for Girls
King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School for Boys and
Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls
The admissions criteria for pupils starting grammar schools in September 2020 have now
changed, catchment areas have been introduced for the King Edwards VI Brimingham grammar schools, however these changes do not apply to Sutton Coldfield Grammar for Girls and Bishop Vesey’s who continue to admit by examination score.

The test is similar to the Birmingham consortium, it is made up of two papers, each approximately 50 minutes long and provided by CEM. However the marks appear higher, this is because a third of the marks are allocated for Maths, a third for NVR and a third for Verbal reasoning bringing the overall average to roughly 300 marks. Places for the above schools are based on exam results and are not linked to catchment areas.
